Stopover in Frankfurt

TJ and I arrived in Frankfurt around noon last Saturday.  Since I had spent hours researching the city and the best way to get around, the things we should see and do, covering as much as possible on foot... we were not thrilled to see that it was raining when we landed.  But we weren't going to let that stop us from exploring a new city, and fortunately the rain let up after not long at all.

This time of year downtown Frankfurt is transformed as Christmas markets overtake the public squares and spill into the streets.  Stall after stall selling delicious winter-time treats filled the air with the most delicious aromas.  Being lunch time, our first stop was at a cozy little restaurant serving traditional German fare.  Our little table was next to an oil radiator and a frosted window, with a view of the buzzing market and carousel in the square.
German sausages with sauerkraut, beef goulash with spaetzle and enormous beers were the order of the day
Well-fed, we rolled back out onto the streets of Frankfurt and took in the spectacle, the crushing crowds, the old-next-to-new architecture and a little bit of gluhwein too!
TJ found his German counterparts and they agreed to a photo even though I'm sure they didn't understand a word we said.
As cold as it was and with sunny South African skies waiting for us the next day, we actually felt we could have spent a couple more days exploring this city.  It was TJ's first time in Germany and he loved our thoroughly authentic experience.
Far too soon we were headed back to the airport to get our connecting flight to Jo'burg.
