I can't wait to eat... a koeksister!
A koeksister derives from the Dutch word koekje, which translates to "cookie". It is a South African syrup-coated doughnut in a twisted or braided shape. The braided rolls of dough are deep-fried in oil and then dipped into cold sugar syrup. The syrup soaks into the dough completely. Koeksisters are very sticky and sweet and taste kind of like honey.
I like to eat them by pulling the sticky braid apart with my fingers and eating a piece at a time. I can't wait to sink my teeth into one in December...
